one is silver and the other gold

6 May 2012

when i was little, i learned this song: “make new friends, but keep the old – one is silver and the other gold.” as a child, i wasn’t sure which was silver and which was gold – should i value keeping old friendships or the process of making new ones more?

now, as an adult living overseas, i find myself faced with the same dilemma: which should i consider more precious – my relationships, experiences, and values from home, or the new ones that i’m currently developing?

scripture sheds some light on my situation: “blessed is the one who finds wisdom, and the one who gets understanding, for the gain from her is better than gain from silver and her profit better than gold” (proverbs 3:13-14).

in this blog i’ll try to bridge the gap between my gold and silver – sharing my unique experiences in a foreign land as well as those that keep me connected to my roots – and the wisdom i’m gaining along the way, which is more important by far.
